Voice Over Coaching in NYC | Training for Commercial, Animation, and Video Games

What Voice Over Coaching Involves

Voice over coaching at Abacus Entertainment is focused on how actors perform in real working situations. Sessions are built around script interpretation, delivery, and the ability to adjust based on direction.

Coaching is not structured as a fixed curriculum. Each session is shaped around the actor’s current level and the type of work they are pursuing, whether that is commercial voice over, animation, video games, or narration.

The goal is to develop performances that feel natural, controlled, and consistent across different types of reads.

Coaching Compared to Voice Over Classes

Voice over coaching and voice over classes serve different purposes.

Classes are typically structured around general instruction and group participation. Coaching is one on one and focused on the individual actor.

Coaching allows for:

  • Direct feedback based on your specific reads
  • Real-time adjustments in tone and pacing
  • Focused work on consistency and delivery

At Abacus, coaching is designed for actors who want to improve specific skills and move forward with clear direction.

Who Voice Over Coaching Is For

Coaching at Abacus supports actors at different stages of their careers.

Some actors are new to voice over and want to build a foundation. Others come from acting, broadcasting, or content creation and are transitioning into voice work. Many are already auditioning and want to improve performance, consistency, or expand into new areas.

Actors typically work with Abacus when they want to:

  • Build or refine foundational voice over skills
  • Improve consistency across auditions and sessions
  • Develop stronger control over tone, pacing, and delivery
  • Expand into new areas such as animation or video games
  • Prepare for professional demo production

Coaching is adapted to the individual rather than placed into a predefined track.

How Coaching Works at Abacus

Coaching begins with a consultation to understand background, goals, and areas of focus.

From there, sessions are tailored to the actor and may include commercial scripts, character material, or narration depending on the direction of training.

Sessions are designed to:

  • Strengthen conversational and natural delivery
  • Improve pacing, timing, and clarity
  • Build consistency across multiple takes
  • Develop the ability to take and apply direction

As actors progress, coaching may lead into demo production or more advanced performance work.

Coaching Beyond Performance

Voice over work involves more than performance. Understanding how to approach auditions, communicate with clients, and position yourself in the market is part of building a sustainable career.

At Abacus, coaching can also include guidance on the business side of voice over. This may involve:

  • Understanding how auditions are approached and evaluated
  • Developing a clear direction for the type of work you want to pursue
  • Learning how to present your materials to clients or agents
  • Building a practical approach to marketing and outreach

This aspect of coaching is integrated into the process when it is relevant, rather than treated as a separate track.

Areas of Voice Over Coaching

Voice over requires different skills depending on the type of work. Coaching at Abacus is available across several areas, each with a distinct focus.

Coaching and Long-Term Development

Voice over coaching is not limited to a single stage of a career. Many actors continue training as they develop, refine their performance, or move into new areas of work.

Coaching can support:

  • Early skill development
  • Ongoing performance refinement
  • Preparation for demos or new markets
  • Adjustments based on industry changes

This allows actors to continue improving without needing to shift between different providers or programs.

A Studio Environment That Supports Real Work

Coaching sessions take place in a professional recording environment. This allows actors to develop both performance skills and an understanding of how sessions function in practice.

Actors gain experience with:

  • Microphone technique
  • Working under direction
  • Managing pacing and delivery during recording

This helps bridge the gap between training and professional work.

I worked with Bruce Kronenberg as a private VO instructor and then did a demo with the team. They are so professional but also really easy to work with--making that demo was some of the most fun I've had. The demo sounds more polished and professional than I could've expected. It's so good that I worried I wouldn't be able to live up to it when I got actual jobs! Bruce walked me through the equipment set up at home (it took me 3 calls to get the tech right--I struggle) and he was never frustrated by how difficult it was for me. I started getting gigs within weeks of putting my demo out. Several have hired me for repeat work, which helps me know that 1) my demo was great and 2) the coaching I got with Bruce was worth it. Best money I've spent!! Highly recommend Bruce's class at Stella Adler, too.

I'm so grateful to have found this studio for Voice Over training. Bruce and Emma helped increase my confidence and guided me through the VO process. The classes helped improve my confidence tremendously since I had zero experience in VO. I felt very comfortable and supported the entire time. It was all new to me and they showed me the way. Thank you Abacus!

The team Abacus is great! I recently recorded my commercial demo with Bruce and Bryant and I’m very happy with how it came out. They were really supportive throughout the whole process and made sure I was happy with the final product. I also took several classes with Bruce and I’m glad I did, he had a lot of knowledge to share and really helped me along the way. I highly recommend them and will definitely be back for more classes, workshops and my next demo!

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I take voice over coaching sessions?

Coaching frequency depends on your goals and experience level. Some actors work weekly to build consistency, while others schedule sessions around auditions, demos, or specific areas they want to improve.

What happens during a voice over coaching session?

Sessions typically involve reading scripts, receiving direction, and making adjustments in real time. The focus is on delivery, pacing, tone, and how well you respond to direction.

Can coaching help if I am already auditioning?

Yes. Many actors use coaching to improve consistency, refine performance choices, and adjust how they approach auditions based on feedback and direction.

Do I need to choose a specific area of voice over before starting coaching?

No. Coaching can help you explore different areas such as commercial, animation, or narration. As your strengths become clearer, training can be focused more specifically.

How do I know if I am ready for demo production?

Readiness is based on consistency, control, and the ability to take direction. Coaching helps determine when your performance is strong enough to be recorded professionally.

Start with a Voice Over Consultation

The first step is a consultation. This provides an opportunity to discuss your background, goals, and what you want to focus on.

From there, coaching sessions are structured to support your next steps, whether you are starting out, refining your skills, or preparing for demo production.
